This Intro To Defensive Rifle training course was developed to help prepare and train anyone in the efficient defensive and fighting use of the AR-15 or other fighting rifles / carbine platforms.
This training experience will teach handling, ballistics & zeroing, manipulation, shooting from multiple positions, defensive concerns and posture, close quarters to longer range precision shooting, and a lot more. It is filled with live fire on the range and honing rifle / carbine fighting and shooting skills, while also addressing legal and physical concerns related to using this type of platform in close quarters and urban environments.
We consider this course to be moderately physical. Most students think it is a fun and challenging, and takes mental engagement. Either way, this training will help each student develop expertise with the rifle.
Most bring an AR-15 / M4-based weapons platform but we often see other platforms during this course, such as the AK variants, the Tavor, Styer, and other bullpups, the Mini-14, M-14, AR-10, and others. We’ve had 9mm, .45, .223, 5.56, 7.62, .308, and other calibers in this course. We’ve even once had a lever-action rifle in this course (a fantastic defensive rifle in the hands of a trained user).
Items & information needed:
– Rifle / Carbine with open sights and/or optics
– Three or more magazines
– 350 to 450 rounds of ammo.
– Eye & Ear protection
– Non-alcoholic beverages & any food / snacks you may want (it’s easiest to bring all food for the day, as there isn’t any food available nearby and we will not have time to leave the range to get to go get food.)
– Appropriate clothing and gear for outdoor environments (rain / cold weather gear, sunscreen, bug spray, head cover, etc.)
***Note: a sling on your weapon is a must, and we generally suggest a quality two-point sling.
***Note: If you have any questions acquiring or about your own weapons, related gear, or ammo, feel free to contact us.
Optional Items:
– magazine carriers and any other desired gear related to rifle carrying, use, and shooting
– a camp chair
– Mat for groundwork
– Sand sock
– sunscreen and / or bug spray
– appropriate clothing for the projected weather during the course (we will be shooting in almost all-weather conditions except for lighting).
We will begin with the basics of rifle safety, set up, considerations, gear and ammo, handling and zero’ing. We’ll move to accuracy and efficient handling, use, and shooting from close distances to longer ranges, and building speed with accuracy. We will get into shooting multiple targets, shooting at varied speeds and the differing modes of accuracy, shooting from multiple positions and barriers, the beginnings of defensive and tactical considerations with your rifle.
This training will be perfect for the complete beginner who may have never handled a rifle before, but it will also be excellent for those who’ve been shooting for a long time, as we will really cement in solid, excellent fundamentals and good habits to create better shooters out of even experienced shooters.
This is a fun day of training, learning the abilities of both the students and the rifles once rock solid safety and fundamentals are obvious.
Come ready to learn, shoot a lot, question a lot, and do a lot. This isn’t a tea and crumpets course. You will learn to handle and shoot well, then fight, really fight, within the context of reality with your weapon, and fight hard. Your body will feel it after the first day; proof you did something good, challenged yourself, and learned great stuff. The goal is to develop skill, accuracy, speed, efficiency and confidence with your rifle.
This course will be taught by Defenders USA’s founder and lead instructor, Adam Winch. Adam is a certified Master Firearms Instructor, with an extensive background as a firearms instructor, a law enforcement and SWAT officer, and as a US Army soldier on multiple tactical teams.
