2 Day Fighting Rifle Applications – Cameo, CO
Fighting Rifle Applications
Cameo Shooting & Education Complex
Oct. 21 & 22nd.
8:30 am to 5:30 pm’ish
Bay 14 (Oct. 21st) & Bay 6th (Oct. 22nd)
This 2-day training event will focus on rifle/carbine training, while also adding the secondary weapon of a handgun for those who already have the skills to use a handgun.
Anyone who does not already have provable handgun skills is more than welcome to register and attend but will only be using a rifle or carbine.
For those who has not attended previous Defenders USA handgun training, this course will immediately start with a short handgun test that must be passed in order to prove they are sufficiently skilled to also used a handgun as their backup weapon during this course.
This is a fighting rifle / carbine skill building course and not a handgun training course, so we will not have time to add in all that will be needed to get handgun shooters up to speed on needed skills during our two days in this course.
If the handgun qualification is not passed, the handgun will not be allowed and only a rifle / carbine will be allowed for that shooter for the training.
This Fighting Rifle Applications training course is a high-caliber course developed to help prepare and train anyone in the efficient defensive and fighting use of the AR-15 or other fighting rifles / carbine platforms within the context of reality.
This training experience will teach beginning to advanced combat-focused long gun shooting, handling, ballistics & zeroing, manipulation, fighting with a rifle, defensive concerns and posture, close quarters fighting to long range precision shooting, and a lot more. It is filled with live fire on the range and honing rifle / carbine fighting and shooting skills, while also addressing legal and physical concerns related to using this type of platform in close quarters and urban environments.
We consider this course to be moderately physical. Most students think it is a fun, challenging ball-buster that takes a lot of mental engagement. Either way, this training course will push each student to develop expertise with the rifle, no matter what each’s abilities and limits.
Most will bring an AR-15 / M4-based weapons platform but we often see other platforms during this course, such as the AK variants, the Tavor, Styer, and other bullpups, the Mini-14, M-14, AR-10, and others. We’ve had 9mm, .45, .223, 5.56, 7.62, .308, and other calibers in this course. We’ve even had a lever-action rifle in this course (a fantastic defensive rifle in the hands of a trained user).
No rifle? We might be able to arrange a rental rifle and magazines for you to use (970-986-0774).
***NOTE: It is helpful if your rifle is zero’ed before attending this course. If you do not know how to zero a rifle prior to attending, we can do it there but the more rifles that are already zero’ed, the sooner we get to the meat of this training.
Needed items:
– A lunch for each day – there will NOT be time to leave the range to get food.
– Rifle / Carbine with open sights and/or optics
– Three or more magazines
– 1000 rounds or more of ammo (The Cameo range has 5.56 / .223 ammo available for purchase, if needed, at some of the best prices in the nation. Please contact them if you need ammo for this course).
– If also carrying a handgun, all related gear with a quality holster, mag holders as needed, and approx. 200 rounds of ammunition.
– $10 range fee per day in cash
– Eye & Ear protection
– Non-alcoholic beverages & any food / snacks you may want (it’s easiest to bring all food for the day, as there isn’t any food available nearby and we will not have time to leave the range to get to go get food.)
– Appropriate clothing and gear for outdoor environments (rain / cold weather gear, sunscreen, bug spray, head cover, etc.)
***Note: a sling on your weapon is a must, and we generally suggest a quality two-point sling. For those who will be carrying a handgun, we will do a decent bit of transitioning to secondary weapons so feel free to bring a handgun, holster, magazines, handgun ammo, etc.
***Note: If you have any questions acquiring or about your own weapons, related gear, or ammo, feel free to contact us.
Optional Items:
– magazine carriers and any other desired gear related to rifle carrying, use, and shooting
– a camp chair
– sunscreen and / or bug spray
– appropriate clothing for the projected weather during the course (we will be shooting in the rain or snow, as only nearby lighting will stop us).
Range Fee:
The Cameo Range charges $20 range fee per day so please bring that amount in cash for either one or both days that you attend. That cash will be collected at the beginning of the course and will be given over to the Cameo personnel.
DAY 1 will be all about the basics of rifle handling and shooting, starting with quickly zero’ing for those who haven’t already set their zero once the handgun tests are over. This is day will be about accurate, efficient handling, use, and shooting from close distances to long range, building speed with accuracy. This training will be perfect for the complete beginner who may have never handled a rifle before, but it will also be excellent for those who’ve been shooting for a long time, as we will really cement in solid, excellent fundamentals to create better shooters out of even highly experienced shooters.
DAY 2 will be about building even more speed, higher accuracy, use of cover, unconventional positional shooting, movement, multiple target engagement, small group and team tactics, medical considerations, cognitive processing and target engagement under stress, and more. If time allows, we will then add close quarters fighting and shooting (CQB), weapons retention, tactics, vehicle close quarters fighting and shooting (VCQB), and more.
This will be an intense two days of training, with a lot of qualifications and testing, always pushing the abilities once rock solid safety and fundamentals have been built into each shooter with their respective weapons.
Come ready to learn, shoot a lot, question a lot, and do a lot. This isn’t a tea and crumpets course. You will learn to handle and shoot well, then fight, really fight, within the context of reality with your weapon, and fight hard. Your body will feel it after the first day; proof you did something good, challenged yourself, and learned great stuff. The goal is to develop confidence, skill, accuracy, speed, and efficiency with your rifle.
This course will be taught by Defenders USA’s Brent Hickmon. Brent is a certified Master Firearms Instructor, with an extensive background as a highly trained shooter and a firearms instructor with multiple highly respected certifications.
